Suncus (Suncus murinus), recently developed as a new small laboratory animal of Insectivora in Japan, is of special interest in understanding tonsillar evolution since the suncus has a pair of primitive palatine tonsils [1]. Phylogenically, the animal is closer to primates than conventional laboratory rodents - mice, rats and guinea pigs lacking palatine tonsils. The present study deals with the ultrastructural and immunohistochemical characteristics of the suncus tonsils and discusses its phylogenic properties.
