This paper discusses some factors that permit an ambiguity in Japanese. The factors are investigated in terms of the comparative study of elliptical expressions in Japanese and English. It is concluded that Japanese elliptical expressions are much more illogical than English, for the reasons that Japanese tend to disregard "words" as a means of communication, while in English "words" play a principal role in communication. In other words, it is quite important for the Japanese speaker to have a right understanding of the hearer's personality behind his words. Mere logical expressions are not always sufficient and acceptable for Japanese, while rather favorable for English. Therefore, in a sense, suggestive or implicative words fit language consciousness in Japanese. The language consciousness and characteristics of Japanese result in creating elliptical expressions illogical to the English hearer.
