We addressed the hypothesis that the recent increase in the incidence of cervical cancerin young patients is due to increased HPV infection. The subjects were 173 patients whowere diagnosed with early cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CIS: 100, Stage I: 73)and underwent early treatment between 1987 and 1996. The ages and incidence of highriskHPV were compared between early (1987-1991) and late (1992-1996) periodgroups. The proportion of young (:<=:44 yrs) subjects increased from 62.9% to 82.0% inthe early vs. late period groups. The mean age of the late period group was significantlylower than the early period group (38.3 vs. 43.6 years, respectively; p <0.005). Highrisk HPV increased significantly in the early vs. late period groups (30.7 vs. 52.3%,respectively; p<0.01) . In young subjects the high risk HPV in the late vs. early periodgroups were 56.1%, compared to 23.1% (p<O.OI). However, there were no significantchanges among subjects aged:<=:34 and 245 years. The increased high risk HPV in the35 to 44 year old subjects in the late period, suggested that HPV infection had increasedin women in their twenties and thirties.
