This study explores the effect of planning time on the writing accuracy of a Japanese learner of English. The subject's accurate use of articles in various written texts, including drafts of a translation, e-mail messages sent to friends, and short impromptu writing activities were analyzed. The findings here could suggest that there is a pattern between planning time and the subject's accurate L2 written discourse; although, more research would be beneficial in order to determine the inter-relationship between planning time and other factors such as topic familiarity, communicative burden, planning strategies, etc. The implications for language teaching are that some planning time or pre-task activity would benefit a learner's L2 writing production.
