Most triathlon events began in the mid-1980's. The main purpose of these events was to enhance community development. For some areas, this purpose was achieved. Success was found in such isolated islands such as Miyako and Sado of Japan, both of which were in enhanced through tourism and community unity. Recently, many studies on the management of triathlon events have been conducted. Most of these studies focused on the views of the participant. However, because a triathlon event demands so much local support, as to the use of public facilities, the need for volunteers, and sometimes initial funding, the perspective of the local residents should be thoroughly evaluated. The Nagasaki-Oshima triathlon event has been held consecutively, for five years. The town of Oshima, in Nagasaki prefecture is on an island. Shipbuilding is the core industry of this town. At this time, the town's government is attempting to diversify its economy by attracting new businesses to the Island. Oshima's leaders believe that the yearly triathlon benefits this project. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the success of this event from the perspectives of the participants, residents and government executives. A field survey sample consisted of 108 participants (return rate 61.1%) and 49 residents (return rate 24.6%). Interviews were conducted with two top officials of the diversification committee. Participant surveys evaluated satisfaction with fan excitement, volunteer staff activity and attitude, the scenic course location and community assistance and cooperation required for such an event. Local residents were questioned on personal satisfaction, community development, and future influences from the external propaganda. The results showed a general 90% participant satisfaction and a 66% positive residential feed back. In the case of Oshima, this yearly triathlon event has proven to develop the community as a whole, easily explained by the gemeinschaft theory. This may not, however, be the case in larger communities where group goals are more diversified. It must also be noted that sport events which impose serious burdens upon a region do not encourage community development. As triathlon events are sponsored throughout the world, it must be remembered that the views of the resident are as important as the views of the participant.
