• The Konan groundwater basin in Kochi Prefecture is threatened by freshwater scarcity, which is aggravated during dry periods. Water quality is key to efficient water management in a basin because it determines the availability of water for various uses, and the quality of our life and ecosystems, besides having an intrinsic value. This paper deals with the assessment of water quality, investigation on seawater intrusion, and analysis of tide-aquifer interaction. The results revealed that the quality of both the river waters and groundwater is normally suitable for most uses. However, during dry periods, the seawater intrusion is discernible up to about 1.0 km in the Monobe River and 1.5 km in the Koso River from their mouths. Wells H-5 and I-2 are considerably affected by seawater intrusion during dry periods. The lower reach of the Koso River aggravates seawater intrusion into Well H-5. Groundwater levels and EC at Wells H-5 and I-2 are appreciably influenced by tidal fluctuations. Furthermore, based on the tidal response of the aquifer, the tidal efficiency is estimated in the range of 38 to 41% at Site H-5 and 20 to 21% at Site I-2. The aquifer hydraulic conductivity at Sites H-5 and I-2 is estimated at 4.5 x 103 and 5.1 x 103 m/s, respectively. Though the estimates of the storage coefficient based on the time-lag analytical model are not reliable for unconfined aquifers, the tidal efficiency-factor model proved to be reliable in this study. Finally, it is concluded that the Konan basin must be managed judiciously and efficiently and that the recommended preventive measures for seawater intrusion are essential for sustainable utilization of its scarce groundwater resources.
