The term the "Charism of the foundation" has been used very often in the field of the consecrated life in recent years, both in the official documents of the Church and in books and articles about spiritual theology, but sometimes without any specification. This article analyzes the usage of the term in the conciliar and post-conciliar magisterium in order to understand the Church's desire and orientation on the "gift of the Spirit (charism) " to Herself. Actually the Vatican Council 11 did not adopt the term "charism" in describing the consecrated life. Neither chapter VI "The Religious" of the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen gentium nor the Decree Perfectae caritatis on the renewal of religious life adopt the term, but these documents contain many expressions and intuitions which would be used afterwards to depict the "charism of the founders, of the institutes, and of the consecrated life". After the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelica testificatio of Pope Paul VI (1971) , the Church documents began to use the terminology "charism of the founders/foundation" of the Institutes of consecrated life. Especially the directives Mutuae relationes (1978) of the Sacred Congregations of the Bishops and of Religious and of the Secular Institutes offer very rich and accurate concepts of the charism of the foundation. Subsequent documents refer to the teaching developed in it. The post-synodal apostolic exhortation of Pope John Paul II Vita consecrata (1996) shows a way to integrate the post-conciliar teaching on this charism from theological, spiritual, canonical and practical points of view. The Magisterium confirms that the charism of the foundation of the Institutes is an experience of the Holy Spirit to be lived, protected, deepened and developed not only by the founders but also by their successors in a communal manner ; and shows that it provides criteria for discerning the authenticity of the charism of the foundation : namely newness in the spiritual life in the Church, in concrete, a new form of the following of Christ (sequela Chirsti) described in the Gospel. Founders are those who courageously suggest how to look at a certain dimension of the mystery of Christ under a new light and make the gift of His life visible in this new perspective. Such newness can occasion oppression, sometimes even by the ecclesiastical authority itself, but at the same time it can be a way to verify the authenticity of the divine vocation of the founders. Other criteria are : enthusiastic apostolic activity as response to the "sign of the times" ; constructive love toward the Church which implying a manifestation of spontaneous obedience to ecclesiastical authority with an attitude of "sentire cum Ecclesia" ; and finally the immanent capacity for renewal which will flower as creative fidelity in a changing world. The Church demands that the members of the Institutes of consecrated life be faithful to their founding charism, and teaches that such faithfulness is one of the most important witnesses that they can offer to the Church and the world. It insists also on the fact that the charism of the different Institutes is a gift to the whole Church, and that the Church as a whole is responsible to protect and develop it.
