Some characteristics of the damping motion of a pendulum-type friction tester were discussed theoretically ; especially on the relation between the motion of pendulum and the load acting on the supporting area of its axis, and on the damping curve in the range of larger amplitudes where the approximate relation of sin θ = θ does not hold. The apparatus for measuring the coefficient of friction and the contact resistance consisted of ; a variable air condenser attached to the pendulum to convert the mechanical damping motion into the modulation of frequency of an electric oscillator, an ohmmeter composed of R-bridge and dynamic condenser electrometer to measure the ohmic drop of applied potential through the contact resistance, and two pen-writing galvanometers to record the results automatically on a common chart. The coefficient of friction is measured with accuracy to ± 2%. The measurable resistance ranges from 10^<-2> to 10^2 Ω. Very interesting results were obtained. The resistance of steel was fluctuating markedly during sliding, while that of brass was nearly constant.
