The current-voltage curves of benzaldehyde were measured at various pH's. From the relation between the wave height and the height of mercury reservoir, and from the temperature coefficient of the limiting current, it was concluded that the limiting current is controlled by the rate of diffusion. The polarographic diffusion coefficient was calculated to be 9.7×10^<-6>cm^2, sec^<-1>, in aqueous solution at 25℃. The wave height was found to be proportional to the concentration between 0.5〜10 millimole/l. The reduction mechanism of the wave at pH greater than 6 was assumed as, [numerical formula] (potential determining step), [numerical formula] considering the slight dependency of the half-wave potential on pH's.
