Friction of various oils is measured by the oiliness testsr of pendulum type designed by Soda. In the first experiment, friction of mineral and vegetable oils, refined by H_2SO_4 and alkali respectively, is measured and the relation between the friction and the number of repetition of oscillation is obtained. In mineral oil, the molecules are non-polar and the friction is found to increase with the number of measurements, perhaps due to the wear of surface film. In vegetable oil, on the contrary, the molecules are polar and friction decreases with the number of measurements, perhaps due to the reason that the surface wears and the adsorbed film is more and more completed. In the second experiment, the effect of the percentage of H_2SO_4 used for refining on friction is investigated. In the last experiment, stabilities of 3 oils', the mineral, the vegetable and the mixed, are compared at a given high temperature, and the refined mineral oil is found to be the most stable in spite of its high friction at room temperature.
