The fading reaction mechanisms of chromogenic magenta dyes with thiosulfate in the ethano-water system were elucidated by using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-az-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-2-pyrazoline-4,5-dione. The dye was confirmed to be faded in the variety of reaction schemes ; reductive fading to form a leuco dye, reductive decomposition of the leuco dye, and adduct formation with bisulfite ions which were produced by decomposition of hypo. The leuco dye formation and its protonation were especially elucidated by means of polarography.
