This paper investigates the different approaches adopted in the study of pragmatic competence of second language learners. It sets out from the notion that the teaching of pragmatics, of language in use, to learners of a second language can empower students learning ability and help them to communicate more effectively in the target language. It looks at pragmatics in two ways. Firstly, a narrow perspecitive is adopted that views pragmatic competence as the process by which learners acquire effective use of speech acts. Secondly, a wider view of pragmatics, known as impression management, is taken. This broader perspective takes into account the fact that language is about social interaction. The advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of research that have been employed in both the narrow and wider view of pragmatics are outlined and discussed. Through such discussion, this paper hopes to highlight the challenges that the second language learner must face if he or she wish to become equipped with both the structural and pragmatic aspects of the target language.
