A survey of opinions on live animal experiments was carried out by the present authors on the first year students at Nihon University School of Dentistry. The result showed that more than half of the students were highly aware of the live animals they had to sacrifice. More than 80% of the students aegeed with the use of live animals in scientific experiments provided that the experiments are used only for the advancement of science and think that the sacrifice is necessary but felt sorry for the animals. Attention has to be given to the fact that 11% of the students deemed robbing animals of lives as quite disturbing and a fourth of them were strongly opposed to the live animal experiments. Of all the students, 55% have already experienced live animal experiments in their high school biology classes, but we could not ascertain the correlation between their experiences and willingness in the animal experiments after entering the university level education. The authors concluded that the teaching method, especially the phase of introduction, employed by the instructors in experiments involving the use of live animals would be decisively important for the student guidance.
