The purpose of this study is to examine the decrease in physical activity in everyday life in Japan, owing to the conveniences offered by higher living standards. The study is based on a series of studies we have carried out in the twenty years on the life style and the modes of physical activity in everyday life of the Japanese. We have further extended this study to include a comparative survey on the time sharing patterns of Chinese as well as Japanese college students of both sexes. The study is based on samplings of quetionnaires distributed to survey movements made during any one day of the week and any one day of the weekend. The Survey was carried out between May and December, 1995, and all questinnaire forms were filled in by the students themselves. The results show that while the life of the Japanese students is characterized by enjoyment, the life of the Chinese students is characterized by study. The differences between the two groups stem from the differences in their economic, social, and cultural background and in also the difference of informational access. On the other hand, both groups showed the tendencies to walk or to do sports less, which suggests the decrease in physical activity in everyday life is not observed to Japan alone. The study confirms the importance of the need to encourage a more physicaly active lifestyle in order to maintain good physical health.
