Artists play an important part in the literary works of E. T. A. Hoffmann. However, some of them have failed and have become unproductive. We have analyzed in this study some of Hoffmann's artist-novels, specially his first novel "Ritter Gluck" (1809) and one of the latest novels "Des Vetters Eckfenster" (1822), considering the following points : why they have failed, what is their function in the novel and whatbrings out their encounter with the narrator. Hoffmann thinks that artists should actively mediate with their works between the real world of philistines and the ideal one of arts. The failed artists have ignored this duplicity of life. Therefore, they cannot materialize their perfect image in mind as a communicative artistic work. Some artists are described as bad examples. The author has no intent to relieve the artists from madness. Others speak for the author's opinions about arts and regain their artistic productivity in the creative cooperation with the narrator as an ideal audience. In addition, the artists expect the narrator to mediate between the readers and them.
