In Thomas Hardy's 'Wessex Novels', nature plays such an important role that these novels can be said to be the products of the soil of 'Wessex'...the imaginary name given by Hardy to Dorset, his native home. The relationship between man and nature is the main theme in almost all of his major works. But the role of nature in this relationship gradually changed as Hardy continued to write. In this treatise, the process of this change has been divided into three phases, and an attempt has been made to shed some light on Hardy's ideological development by discussing the characteristics of each phase.
