• The purpose of this article is to clarify the characteristics in the research on regional gap related to economic development in China through reviewing the Japanese and Chinese publications on this subject since 1990. 1) Japanese researches tend to aim to grasp and understand the real figures of regional gap based on data analysis while Chinese ones tend to aim to raise issue and policy on regional development based on descriptive analysis on regional gap. Although many reasons for this difference can be taken into account, one clear thing is that direct interactions between these two schools will be very useful for the better development of research for the both sides. 2) Data used in the researches are limited to the provincial data published by Chinese government. More detailed research requires data of the lower level such as prefecture or town/village. The better accessibility to data in the government system is necessary for this. 3) The researches based on data analysis, all of them, are the time-series analysis using only one variable. No research is observed as of cross-sectional analysis using multi-variables. 4) Most of the variables used in data analysis are income variables measuring regional gap and consequently these researches focus less on the background behind the regional gap. In other words, few researches focus on the causal factors of regional gap. Especially there is no research based on statistical data analysis focusing on the relation between economic liberalization and regional gap.
