The writers attempted to survey by questionnaire data and visits the actual conditions of reference services performed in the main libraries in selected large universities (twenty-eight national and public universities and twenty-four private universities). The aspects of the survey, conducted in 1977, were : (1) organization ; (2) staffing ; (3) physical arrangements of the reference departments ; (4) services provided ; (5) reference questions ; and (6) reference collections. Reference staffs vary in size from one to nine professionals. The difference in staff size depends chiefly on variation in responsibilities of reference departments. The activities carried on by libraries surveyed were as follows ; answering reference questions (100%); instruction in the use of books and the library (92%); preparation and dissemination of library guides and other publications (100%) ; maintaining and care of reference collections (94%) ; recommendation to purchase of general library materials (94%) ; compiling bibliographies and indexes (71%) ; organizing and maintaining information files (67%) ; planning book displays (90%) ; contributing to regional bibliographical projects (51%) ; photocopying service (100%) ; interlibrary loans (92%) ; and recording reference questions and taking reference statistics (80%). Reference questions are strongly concerned with requests for bibliographical information and checking of the library holdings. In private university libraries, students were by far the heaviest users of reference assistance. The size of the reference collections varies from about 1,400 to 39,000, with most falling in the 4,000 to 7,000 volume range.
