This reflects the dramatic changes that have taken place over the years in the environment surrounding education in Japan. First, the downward trend in the number of children is becoming stronger, while the percentage of students who go on to university is growing every year. Secondly, education provided by high schools is becoming increasingly diverse. Since there are various types of high school, students enter university from widely varying educational backgrounds. Thirdy, as the gap in academic abilities among students is widening, attitudes towards going on to university are also becoming diverse. Against the above background, there is growing awareness of the importance of high sdhool-university cooperation, and a wide variety of efforts are being made in both high schools and universities in order to enhance the connection between them and promote mutul understanding. Howevwe, to ensure the effective progress of high school-university cooperation, a number of challenges have to be clearly recognized and tackled. Particularly, it is vital of further raise the awareness of both high school and universities, as is also emphasized in the "Hironaka Report." The important thing is that high schools and universities share the emphasis on personality development in students in later adolescence. It is anticipated that Japanese society will continue to change at an increasing pace. In such circumstances, it is not easy to predict how university education will develop. Nevertheless, it is expected that efforts towards high school-university cooperation will become of greater importace in the future.
