Many ponds in Shinto Shrines and temples in Japan has been polluted by influx of contaminated water and eutrophication. Dazaifu Tenmangu is a famous shrine as god of learning, and visited by many people. Recently, the pond water is polluted very much, and required to clean the water. We examined the field expriment of clarification system of pond water on Shinji-ike (pond), the center of shrine, by introducing natural filter material and natural clarification system. The results showed that the water quality of Shobu-ike, up the river. was gradually cleaned by SS filter effect in the pond. The other hand, in Shinji-ike, deeper than Shobu-ike, down the river, floating of accumulated material from the bottom of pond and also inflowing large amount of particulated materials occurred during rainy seasons, so that the functions of clarification system were not worked well by the large load. However, water clarity incleased significantly and feeling of uncleanness was eliminated. The organisms on the filter materials were adsorbed more on pumice than on charcoal and ceramics. The particles more than 10μm were removed little by little with this system. However, in this experiment, clarification rate is slow because of using the natural filter materials. It is necessary to improve the clarification system using other active membranes for further purification of water.
