A modified version of the Nordhaus model of the political business cycle is analysed under the assumption that the government's objective is to get reelected with a given (increased) majority in the minimum time possible. The problem is modelled as a time-optimal control problem and some results from the time-optimal control literature are given. Applicability of this type of analysis to other policy problems is briefly discussed.
