Most readers of William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of King Richard The Second probably get the impression that King Richard 2 (1367-1400), deposed and murdered by his own cousin, was a poetic and philosohical youth, a Hamlet. Both Lancastrian and anti-Lancastrian chronicles show that his real image was quite different - a wilful, courageous and irascible youth ; so, evidently, do Chaucer's short poems. Geoffrey Chaucer, as an able bureaucrat, not as a court poet, served Richard 2 faithfully, and had a deep commitment to several political and foreign affairs during the reign of Richard 2. This is why he could not, or did not make his attitude about the political and religious problems of his day clear. In this essay, I would like to refer to Lak of Stedffastnesse and The Tale of Melibee, and examine why he gave his hearty, moral advice to Richard 2 and what he really intended to say.
