The aim of this present paper is to represent the correlation between the products of studies in pragmatics and the field of applied linguistics realized in learners' dictionaries, through investigation into the description and treatment of 'approximatives' in English. Even a casual glance at the current trend in English linguistics reveals how greatly studies in socio-linguistics and pragmatics have influenced the field of second language teaching and learning. In this field came further improvement in English dictionaries for users who speak and write the language as a foreign or second language. From a user-oriented standpoint, it seems natural that the dictionary makers and editors should have an increasing interest in appropriate descriptions of word usages in English learners' dictionaries such as LDOCE^2, OALD^4, COBUILD, which are typical ones recently published in English-speaking countries. The present writer, comparing these dictionaries which have a good reputation, with several English-Japanese dictionaries, makes investigations into how the descriptions of the differences among 'only', 'merely', and 'just' as one example of English approximatives manifest pragmatical processes. Although the result of the examination leads to a reluctant conclusion that even such popular English dictionaries compiled for foreign learners do not always provide an adequate supply of information on a subtle difference in usages which causes a great deal of confusion among non-English-speaking people, we cannot help feeling that better usage descriptions in English learners' dictionaries will become more available and satisfactory, because of the greater concern of language learning with realities.
