More than two hundred corporate sport teams have been suspended their activities since 1990. Although such companies cite an economic downturn as the reason for the discontinuation, sixty per cent of them do not have plans to resume the projects even once the recession is over. This study examines the current situation of corporate sporting in terms of Japanese corporate management. It also defines features and problems of the present state of corporate sport by clas- sifying the teams according to their administrative styles which are being diversified. Not only the recession following the collapse of the bubble economy but the introduction of the management practices, such as reconsidering of the lifetime employment system of reexamining of the cost - effectiveness in their business, have influenced corporate sport. Additionally, as the number of contract employees, rather than full-timers who have better job security, have risen for the enhancement of the team performance, it is easier for corporations to withdraw from the projects. The teams are divided into three categories; the company-owned club, which is owned and run by a single company; the company-supported club, which is financially supported by other companies and/or local communities as well as the company that originally owns the club; and the independent club, which is independent from the company that used to own it and is self-supporting. This paper also suggests that in the future it is possible to establish a new concept of corporate sport by considering the support for the scheme as a contribution to the local community.
