In order to investigate the anomalous hyperfine structure which appears in an atomic spectrum when the separations of a term multiplet are so small that they are comparable with or smaller than the hyperfine splittings caused by the nuclear spin, the hyperfine structure of,Al II, the most typica1 example, has been studied, using an apparatus with larger resolving power than that of previous workers. From an investigation of the lines λλ6243, 6231 and 6226 (4^3P-4^3D), the term 4^3D has proved to be a typical example in which the ordinary multiplet character is strongly perturbed by the splittings due to nuclear spin, and the anomalous feature of the structure of these lines was found to be explained by the general theory. Further, the structure of the term 4^3D determined from the above mentioned lines was also verified by the lines λλ4590, 4588 and 4586 (4^4D 7^3F ), agreement between observed and calculated structure being satisfactory. At the same time, values of the hyperfine structure constant of the term 7^3F_4,_3,_2 could be determined approximately. The observed structure of the lines λλ3655, 3651 and 3649 (4^3P-5^3D) obtained so far is also briefly mentioned, although data on these lines are still insufficient for testing the theory. Finally, reproductions of interference patterns taken with several kinds of interferometers are given in Fig.l.
