Recently, the fast changing and rapidly ageing population of Japan has started to make itself felt. Of particular note, is the need for adequately trained people to work with the elderly. In 1987, the Social Welfare Worker and Care Worker law was passed. At the same time, new curriculum were introduced into high schools creating departments dealing with this. Departments dedicated to teaching social work offer specialised courses with students having to pass no less than 38 credits of social work. Generalised social work courses require students to pass a maximum of 30 credits of social work. This means that schools can offer a general course in Social Work and / or a special dedicated course. It is important for students to study social work education, as this will help students to develop character as well as to prepare them for employment. Unfortunately, in the general social welfare course, problems do arise. The quality of the curriculum being taught varies depending on the school that offers these courses.
