Nuclear resonance absorption of Na^<23> in single crystal and polycrystalline sodium chloride was studied in order to examine the effect of nuclear quadrupole moment of Na^<23> on the shape of absorption line. The experimental apparatus and qualitative results are described in this paper. Magnetic field was stabilized using both a current stabilizer and a proton magnetic field regulator. A 1 kilo-watt motor-generator supplied the magnet current, which was stabilized by means of a mechanical switch modulator and electronic circuits. The output of a-phase sensitive detector was automatically recorded as a function_ of the frequency of the spectrograph. The absorption line in a strained single crystal of sodium chloride was broader than that of the same crystal that was annealed at 500℃ in the atmosphere of hydrogen. Similar result was obtained in polycrystalline sodium chloride: The absorption line in ground polycrystal was broad. These effects can be considered as due to the interaction of the quadrupole. moment of Na^<23> with the electric field gradient that is produced by a charge distribution modified by the stress.
