Japan is currently the world's leader in average life expectancy and other indices of longevity such as disability-adjusted life expectancy. Okinawa has long been the leading prefecture within Japan in terms of most indices of healthy longevity and successful aging. The main purpose of this research was to find out the main factors for successful aging from the analysis of personality and its correlation with activities of daily living. Nineteen community dwelling centenarians living in their own homes in mainland of Okinawa were randomly selected from a list of 505 centenarians. Institutionalized and hospitalized centenarians were excluded. Official approval for this project was received from the prefectural government and informed consent was obtained from the centenarians themselves or their main family caregivers. A team of I doctor, I nurse and 1 or 2 technicians visited the centenarian subjects at their homes interviewing them and/or their caregivers and gathered the following information consistent with protocol and instruments approved by the International Centenarian Study including a medical history, ADL'S, physical examination including a blood pressure measurement and electrocardiogram, a brief life history and various questionnaires that included a personality assessment utilizing 61 items. Results showed that 89.47% of subjects were functioning independently with regards to locomotion; 89.47% to eating and 73.68% in toileting. In the analyses of characters and behaviors, optimistic (89.47%), sociable (94.74%) and obstinate in their own way (87.47%) and polite mannered (89.47%) were recorded. "Optimistic and obstinate" were considered to be typical personality traits of Okinawan-Japanese centenarians. No particular relation between ADL level and personality were recognized in the centenarian subjects.
