In the current Japanese Specifications for Highway Bridges (JSHB), the design methods for compression members made of high strength steel are not coded. The design of such members is, therefore, carried out on the basis of the concept similar to that of mild steel. But, the design concept is not rational for the members made of high strength steel. Because the characteristics of residual stress distribution and stress-strain relationship of high strength steel is different from that of mild steel. In this study, the ultimate strength of truss bridges using the compression members made of high strength steel are investigated in order to value the design concept of compression members made of high strength steel. Firstly, the trial design of the truss bridges using the compression members made of high strength steel is carried out. Then the ultimate strength of the truss bridges is investigated through the elasto-plastic and finite displacement analysis considering the inherent characteristics of residual stress distribution and stress-strain relationship of high strength steel.
