The purpose of the present study was to examine how daily social interaction relates to loneliness. For this purpose, college students' social interaction was measured using the Japanese version of the Rochester Social Interaction Record (RIR). Subjects kept their daily social interactions anytime they had a social interaction lasting 10 minutes or longer for 2 weeks. The results showed that quality of interaction (ex., emotional experience, and reciprocity) correlated with loneliness, but not quantity of interaction (ex., the number of social interactions, a network size). This finding was consistent across different levels of relationships (best friends, ordinary friends, acquaintances). It was, however, found that both quality and quantity of interaction variables showed strong correlations with loneliness for large size interaction (interaction with 5 or more participants). This result was interpreted in terms of collectivism and shallowgroup- oriented interpersonal relationships among young people. Machiavellianism, on the other hand, was particularly related to quality and quantity of interaction with ordinary friends. It was felts that loneliness was more a result of interpretation of one's interpersonal relationships than actual interpersonal relationships.
