The concepts of fengshui have affected areas around China directly or indirectly. It is said that fengshui came to the Korean Peninsula during the Silla Dynasty. Since then, they have grained wide acceptance among the people. The introduction of fengshui to Okinawa, on the other hand, came relatively recently. It came directly from China in the modern period. The introduction of fengshui was related to the policies of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, It spread from the shizoku (mandarin class) to the common folks, The geomancers played a major role in this process. However, during the wave of modernization from the Meiji Era, the geomancers lost their social status as specialists. For this reason, while knowledge of fengshui has survived in fragmentary forms among the Okinawan people, there has not been any systematic interpretation of fengshui nor the application of such to real social life. The knowledge and techniques of fengshui has passed from geomancers to the common people and handed down from generation to generation. In the various regions in East Asia, the social status of geomancers and their process of apprenticeship differ. This, in turn, has affected how fengshui functions in the folk culture. In the case of Korea, fengshui has been shaped by the fact that its spread was influenced by Buddhism. Geomancers also went through mountain trekking and other trials during the process of apprenticeship, and the Korean form of fengshui gave special emphasis to the shape of mountains. In contrast, in Okinawa, geomancers lost their status as bureaucrats from the Meiji Period and ceased to be professionals since there was no place for apprenticeship. While fengshui is still consulted to determine the auspicious date for building a house or a tomb or the desirable direction of such architecture, knowledge of fengshui has become a part of customs to a certain degree. Therefore, the approach to fengshui is different from that in Korea, where properly trained geomancers are still present. This paper compares fengshui in Okinawa and Korea, focusing on the historical background and the difference between geomancers in the two locations.
