In the Taisho era, Tokyo Educational Museum which is now called National Science Museum held 18 special exhibitions that were promoted by the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this paper is firstly to describe the museum in transition to the initial phase of the 'modern museum' which is characterized by specialization and. Popularization, especially through the two of the exhibitions held in 1919 and 1920, and secondly to examine the two characteristics in the context of modernization of the museums in Japan.
