90 million poor people inhabit the Loess Plateau, China where they are facing severe soil degradation incurred by deforestation, over-grazing, over-cultivation and so on. The soil degradation causes not only deterioration of the agricultural production of the plateau but also sedimentation and unstable river flow leading to floods, exhaustion of river water, functional disorder of irrigation systems, etc. in downstream. This paper reviews measures to intervene in the escalating soil degradation and discusses approaches for improving the soil environment.総説 / Review
