This paper discusses the possibility of the transformation of North Korean socialistic companies. In this paper, three possible future scenarios concerning North Korean companies are presented. The first one is based on the traditional trend which you have seen already. In this scenario, North Korea will keep the principle of national self-reliance and realize the autarky. It will not have a big impact on Northeast Asian economies. The possibility for such a scenario is low, because of the danger of severe economic poverty. The second scenario is based on economic unification, based on the model of the German reunification. In this scenario, political and also economic problems are likely. According to the lessons learnt from the German reunification, rapid transformation strategies are problematic. Although Japan and the U.S.A. support it, South Korea would find it difficult to carry through such a plan. The last scenario, which is the most realistic, is that North Korea will open its market and then proceed to a market economy incrementally as in China and Vietnam. In this case North Korea needs some support (e.g., social infrastructure, companies modernization and human resource development).
