Nearly one hundred years ago, Izumo, Province of the Gods, lost a most favorite son. Though he had stayed there for a brief part of the fourteen years he spent in Japan, he took his Japanese name from the region, as well as a wife, and also took the curiosity that had been so aroused there with him on all his further journeys. Some of his journeys were as a teacher of the English language, and is the subject of this paper. Through his fascination of Japan he struck a common cord with her people, and being dedicated to his new land he sought to make the finest contribution he was able to. He reached international fame as a writer and interpreter of the Japanese culture to the West. Looking deeper into his life and times, we find a gifted teacher who through his own linguistic and cultural knowledge cultivated the sensitivity to appropriately challenge and nurture his students.
