While remaining largely unknown to general art lovers, Jess (born Burgess Collins in 1923)has attained a considerable reputation as one of the most extraordinary painters in the United States today. The vanguard poets like John Ashbery and Michael Palmer acknowledge their enormous admiration for Jess' artistic achievements. Art critics rank him along with the legendary Californian artists, such as Wallace Herman, Bruce Conner, George Herms and Jay DeFeo. Focusing upon some of his major works, I will examine them as the essential collaborations with Robert Duncan, his life-long lover known as a leading figure of the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance. The first part of this article focuses upon Duncan's three major poetry books illustrated by Jess, A Book of Resemblances, Names of People and The Cat and the Blackbird. All examples taken from those books show us that Jess' drawings are by no means subsidiary aspects for Duncan's exuberant words. In every case of their collaborations, the painter plays a principal role as much as the poet does, and therefore each of them prompts a lively response from the other and creates a hyper-synthetic field of art and poetry. The discussion is followed by the analysis of Jess' serial works called "Translations." Each piece in that series contains a monochrome picture with the enlarged reproduction of it in oil paint, which is extremely faithful but scrumptiously colorful. Moreover, these constituents are juxtaposed with the particular texts extracted from various sources, so that all of them can engage in a play of productive associations. To borrow Duncan's key phrase, Jess' works form "a field of conversions," whose changeable kinetics is also inherent in the poet's pieces like "Song of the Borderguard" and "Upon His Return," where puns and word-plays radically enhance the increment of derivative meanings. All this evidence leads to the conclusion that Jess' later works including "Translations" should be regarded as fundamental collaborations with Duncan's writings replete with multiple mutations.
