Tao Xing-Zhi (1891-1946) was one of those who studied in the United States and returned home to dominate the Chinese academic circles of the pre-revolutionary days, but he was later known as an activist of the People's Education Movement, which was strongy colored by John Dewey's educational theory. In this paper, I will deal with the following problems: (1) Tao's educational thoughts, and (2) the theory and practice behind Xiao-Zhuang expeirmental school. Tao's educational thoughts were not formulateted into a complete theoretical system, but werea guiding-spirit for his educational practice. I will analyze his theory of jiao-xue-zuo he-yi a union of teaching, learning, and doing. This theory reflects Tao's strong critism of China's traditional notion of "instruction" and his desire to critically adapt the project method. Xiao-Zhuang, Tao's most famous educational creation, was established in the suburbs of Nan-Jing in 1927 and was closed in 1930. Xiao-Zhuang was multi-educational institution with three major aspects: teacher-training, elementary education and social education (or social reform)
