Historically, most friendships have been formed by people who met face-to-face. However, om recemt years, with the expansion of the Internet, the Internet has become, for some people, and additional way of meeting peoploe and forming friendships. In this paper, I looked at the characteristics of close friendships in general and how they are manifested in Internet and face-to-face friendships. In order to do this, in this pilot study, I evaluated questionnaires filled out by 21 participants about the characteristics in close friendships (both what they are and how important they are) and how those characteristics were manifested in a specific friendship, either on the Internet or face-to-face. The characteristics that were listed most often were supportiveness, common background/interests/experience, trust, honestry/sharing, and a sense of humor. Supportiveness and common background/interests/experience were mentioned most frequently, and supportiveness and honestry/sharing were rated highest. In this paper, I discuss the characteristics, using the participants own words used to describe their friendships. While this sample size was too small to draw definitive conclisions about differences between face-to-face and Internet friendships, the participants in this study did find the characteristics that hey valued in friendships in both Internet and face-to-face friendships.
