The heroine's inner conflict between her feeling of class superiority and her sensual desire for a lower class man as represented in "Fanny and Annie"(1912) deserves our fullest cinsideration. This early work by Lawrence can be seen as an important precursor to his successful effort in Lady Chatterley's Lover (1927) to descrive a woman's transformation through her relationship with a man. In this story, we are given a profound insight into Fanny's sensual desire and her struggle to find something greater than just momentary physical fulfillment. We also see that her goal goes beyond being part of working-class communal solidarity as a counter to middle-class indibidualism. As the heroine's name suggests, in "Fanny and Annie,"Lowrence explores the theme of a woman's struggle to divest herself of feelings of class superiority in order to return to a more fulfilling and more authentic womanhood.
