Okinoerabu Island has a rich natural habitat and a unique culture that coexist, and it is veryimportant that we tie these to the next generation. Regarding water resources, OkinoerabuIsland is one of the coral upheaval islands and it has been historically difficult for residents toget water resources for their daily lives. There are used to be more than 130 springs using forresidential lives, for drinking, cooking, washing clothes and taking bath, etc. Because the localgovernment (China Town and Wadomari Town) developed the infrastructure in the early 1950s, most of the residents stopped using natural springs for their daily use. Now there are only afew records of natural springs in Okinoerabu Island and the residents might forget their historyand live culture with the springs. At first, this project tried to make a "spring location map"for basic reference by fieldwork, using GPS information and interviews of the residents. Inthis project, I also describe a community improvement plan called "Sustainable Society". Iwould like to utilize ESD and this concrete example, and would like to seek the possibility ofthe ESD promotion in Okinoerabu Island in near future. This interim report covers theresearch study through 2011.
