Even at present, we can see an elm tree in the plaza in front of leglise St. Gervais in Paris, much the the same as the one illustrated in TOPOGRAPHIA GALLIAE de Meriens published at Frankfort, Germany, in 1655. But the "elm t'ree" of old was cut down during the height of The Revolution, because it was believed to be a religious symbol with several different meanings - the Cross, the Saint, the parish, martyrdom, etc. On the other hand, the Couperins, probably the most distinguished of all musical dynasties, are symbolistic organists associated with the leglise St. Qervais. This paper, a cross comparative study of both, delves into their symbolic characters and modification of their meaning derived from social factors, and contains articles on the elm tree and the 'elm tree crest' of the leglise de St. Gervais ; social customs and historical meanings of the symbolism of elm trees; religious symbolism of elms in the Bible; the symbolism of the Couperins in the church mass; the musical style of Gervais-franpois Couperin;and the conclusion.
