This paper reports the results of a questionnaire study designed to explore the background, motivation and interests of first-year English students at Yokkaichi University. Primarily, this study was done in order to gather information to aid in the decision process related to choosing appropriate teaching methods and materials for this group of students. The results of the study indicate that although during the past decade there have been attempts to make high school English education more oriented towards communicative language use, considerable emphasis is still placed on helping students improve reading and grammar skills in high school English classes. The results also indicate that although students report that their previous experiences studying English have been somewhat unsatisfactory, they are motivated by the idea of studying English in university classes which have a greater emphasis on oral/aural aspects of communication.
