There have not been any reports in the field of plastic surgery describing the concrete pathologic condition of polysurgery because most cases of polysurgery are overlooked preoperatively due to the absence of any apparent manifestation of mental signs. In the present study, we applied The Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale (CPRS) to patients with polysurgery and evaluated their psychopathological characteristics, as well as establishing a preoperative screening procedure that facilitates the discrimination of patients with polysurgery by assessing other factors. The subjects consisted of 150 patients who underwent plastic surgery in our department between April, 1997 and December, 1999 (including 31 patients with polysurgery). As a result, male sex ; expected surgical sites of eyelids, cheek, and jaw ; a previous history of consulting other hospitals more than three times ; and postoperative dissatisfaction were extracted as factors that influenced the development of polysurgery. In addition, subjective psychopathological symptoms suggestive of a state of anxiety, depression, or obsession such as sadness, inner tension, inability to feel, pessimistic thoughts, hypochondriasis, compulsive thoughts, rituals, lassitude, fatigability, automatic disturbances, and ideas of persecution were observed. The results of a multivariate analysis suggested that the psychopathological characteristics considering the above factors can be used as subscales that facilitate the discrimination of patients with polysurgery in the field of plastic surgery.
