Diabetes mellitus (DM) outpatients, ages ranged from 15-28 years, either with DM complications (n=7) or without (n=25) were surveyed for psychosocial adjustments. The method of survey were through written questionnaires and interviews. The aims of this survey were to describe (1) patients' psychological adjustment to DM complications, (2) other patients' anticipation of potential DM complications, and (3) social adjustment of those with complications. The results show that 70% of those who have not yet developed complications were worried about developing potential complications in the future. On the other hand, patients with complications appear to be disturbed at school or workplace. The complications also have effects on the patients' everyday affairs. Furthermore, the patients report their anxiety regarding further deterioration of their symptoms. The results suggest that psychological support is necessary for patients with DM complications, along with education on their own DM management.
