本論は,越後高田藩主が固有の役として担当していた関川関所の女手形の発行について,手形発行のプロセスと女性の通関の実態の一端を明らかにするとともに,手形の発行をめぐる一件から,手形に表記された女性の概念を検討し,当時の文化及び風俗をめぐる意識・観念のずれを指摘し,さらに被差別民に対する手形発行の問題について検討する。This study disucusses : 1) how documents for women to pass through a regional gateway were issued and how women successfully made the passage, based on the documents for women issued by the Sekikawa Barrier, which only issued the documents in the Takada Han of the Echigo region in early modern times of Japan ; 2) how women in Edo times were conceptualized and how the concept of women was different from that seen in the culture and manners and customs of those times based on one case the document being issued ; and 3) what the problems were of issuing those documents for people who were socially discriminated against.
