Human beings (Homo sapience) use language, the concept of numbers, and the faculty of reasoning. In addition to these extraordinary cognitive abilities, we have mind and consciousness. When did mind and consciousness develop in the history of evolution? This paper aims to explore the current controversial issue of the evolution of the mind. In particular, I will discuss the evolution of the mind with special reference to the expansion of the brain. In the first chapter, the evolutionary process in which the brain expanded in primates will be discussed. In the second chapter, self-consciousness and cognition of other members in primates will be discussed. In the third chapter, three levels of human consciousness will be discussed with reference to the mechanism of the brain.
