This paper is mainly concerned with the seasonal variations in the breeding activities of barnacles,in the number of larvae appearing in inshore waters and in the number of newly settled barnacles onexperimental panels. The breeding intensity is considered to be shown by the reciprocal of the brood period which covers the time from one oviposition, or liberation, to the next. In raft condition, the breeding intensityand proportion of individuals carrying egg masses in the population remain very similar to each otherthroughout the year, but in intertidal specimens, it is not necessarily so. Balanus improvisus in Matoya Bay and B. amphitrile in Machiya-ura, Pacific coast of Central Honshu, may breed throughout the year, but in other Balanus species in these areas and in Chthamaluschallengeri in Hakodate Bay, southern coast of Hokkaido, breeding does not occur during the servemonths of winter. It is shown that for any study sites, settlement intensity of all barnacles as well aslarval appearance strictly inherits the seasonal breeding activities of adult barnacles. Nauplius larvae maintain their vertical positions near the surface during the low tide, and cypridsdo so to some degree near the bottom during the low tide and ebb tide. Both in the intertidal zone and under the raft, when the settlement begins in spring, most of thecrawling cyprids and newly settled barnacles are found on the upper test panels which were hung vertically in the habitats, but after summer, those settlements extend to the lower ones.
