The fundamental characteristic of mysticism is the change occurring in what is perceived as the self. Judging from this point of view, the American mystical company includes loosely, after Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Hart Crane, Henry Miller, Kenneth Patchen, Theodore Roethke, and among more recent writers, Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder. This paper treats mainly of two distinguished personalities among them, Walt Whitman of "Song of Myself" and Angry Kenneth Patchen, more particularly on their postures of Madness and Anti-Literature.
