Our concern is to examine "Wakefield, " focusing on the nattaror's narration and his psychology. The narrator's intention is to indicate the "moral" which he thinks is drawn from the case of Wakefield's disappearance. But, though he gives psychological descriptions of Wakefield and repeatedly casts reproaches upon him in order to emphasize the "moral, " the story he tells seems to diverge from his intention. He does not have efficient control over the story. This is partly because, in spite of the repeated criticism of Wakefield, the psychology of the narrator, who has something in common with Wakefield, is reflected in the narration. The narrator wants to exorcise the part common to Wakefield and himself. In this respect, "Wakefield" is the story of an exorcism. In addition, if we give proper consideration to the relation between the narrator and Hawthorne, we will find Hawthorne's resemblance to the narrator.
