In this paper I will present how Japanese learners or users of English will be able to understand English expressions by using dictionaries. This is not a quantitative, but qualitative discussion. I compared Japanese translations with the original sentences, taken from an essay and two novels, and tried to grasp the process through which Japanese translators of English comprehended English expressions. As often pointed out, Japanese translators tended to translate English sentences by putting nouns, especially abstract nouns, into Japanese verbal nouns. Also, even when they translated English adjectives, they sometimes used verbals instead of equivalent adjectives in Japanese. I found this verbalization more often than I had expected before starting the comparison. Understanding the meaning and usage of verbs is often different from the cases of nouns and adjectives. In the case of verbs, merely consulting a dictionary may not be enough to understand the usage. It is necessary to use previously acquired knowledge on grammatical rules such as participial construction. We find so many errors in the Japanese translations from English essays and novels by professional translators. I believe that we can minimize such errors by consulting dictionaries whenever we feel a slight doubt about the meaning or usage of some English expressions. Connotations, especially, tend to be language-specific and culture-dependent, so that consulting dictionaries will help Japanese learners and users of English find appropriate Japanese expressions.
